On February 16, 1918, twenty members of the Council of Lithuania did something remarkable: they unanimously signed the Act of Independence, declaring Lithuania a sovereign state. This wasn't a comfortable decision. World War I was still raging, Germany occupied their territory, and Russia—which had controlled Lithuania for over a century—wasn't going to be happy about it. But the council members recognized something crucial: there are moments when waiting for perfect conditions means missing your window entirely.
I think about this often when working with tech leaders who are postponing difficult decisions. Whether it's finally sunsetting that legacy system, committing to a major architectural change, or taking your startup in a bold new direction, there's rarely a "perfect" time. The Lithuanian council didn't have guarantees. They couldn't predict that within months, Germany would lose the war, or that Lithuania would face immediate threats from Soviet Russia and Poland. What they had was clarity about their vision and unanimous commitment to act on it.
The most successful projects I've seen share this quality: a decisive moment when the team commits fully to a direction, even when the path forward isn't crystal clear. It's not recklessness—the Lithuanians had been planning and debating for months. But at some point, planning must become action. Lithuania's independence wouldn't be secure for years, but without that February declaration, there would have been nothing to fight for. Sometimes the most important thing you can do is put your stake in the ground and declare, "This is what we're building."
